There has been a major shift in how we play retro games that’s happening right before our eyes. Traditionally to play old retro games we would use emulation, but in recent times technology has advanced and thanks to Agentic AI it’s possible to very quickly port games to the PC using technique known as recompilation – translating machine code directly into a modern language (like C) using automated tools. It skips the painful years of manual reverse-engineering, letting developers make native versions of software or retro games in days or week. This has left to a mass influx of recomps flooding the scene.
The Recomp (recompilation) and Decomp (decompilation) scene has gone insane with literally new reccomps showing every day. But are they any good? And how you keep up to date with everything?
