The Phantom of the Opera premiered at the Astor theater in New York City, on September 6, 1925. But if you want to get technical, the first cut was shown to a test audience on January 7 and 26 in Los Angeles. On April 26, a 2nd cut was shown at the Curran theater in San Fransisco. And finally, the 3rd cut has its 100th anniversary today! In this video, I talk about its convoluted history and sum up the appeal of Lon Chaney’s haunting incarnation as the Phantom.
