Overview

Beats of Rage is a side-scrolling beat ‘em up developed by indie studio Senile Team as a tribute to the Streets of Rage series. Featuring sprites and themes from SNK’s King of Fighters franchise, it combines fan-service visuals with old-school gameplay. Initially created for PC, it quickly found a second life as a Dreamcast homebrew sensation.

🕹️ Gameplay

Players take control of characters modeled after King of Fighters heroes and battle their way through wave after wave of street-level enemies. With combos, throws, and special attacks, Beats of Rage emulates the feeling of 16-bit brawlers while injecting it with SNK style and flair.

  • Playable Characters: Choose from multiple KOF-inspired fighters, each with their own move sets.
  • Classic Beat ’em Up Design: Side-scroll through alleys, arcades, and gang-infested streets.
  • Pickups & Health: Grab food and weapons from the ground or smashed crates.
  • Co-op Mode: Play with a friend for the full arcade-style experience.

🌄 Visuals and Audio

Beats of Rage reuses character sprites and animations from King of Fighters to great effect, combining them with custom-built backgrounds and effects. It feels like a “what if SNK made a Streets of Rage game?” dream come true. Smooth animation and varied environments keep the experience lively.

The soundtrack features original tracks that mimic gritty 90s beat ‘em up music with punchy basslines and streetwise melodies. Punches, kicks, and item pickups have retro-style sound effects reminiscent of the Genesis era.

🏆 Replayability

Replayability is strong thanks to its fast-paced co-op mode, difficulty levels, and mod support. Players can swap in custom mods, characters, and levels, expanding the game’s life beyond the base content. It’s also perfect for casual pick-up-and-play brawling sessions.
